The Real Deal On Hair Extensions

May 20, 2010
By

Ladies, we all have a friend in the crew who always has the best weaves. Well, my friend is Qiana, better known as Celebrity Q, and this girl wears hair extensions so much that I don’t even know what her real hair looks like. But, the woman knows how to rock the hair-by-the-ounce, so I asked her to give us all tips on how to get a fabulous mane – even if we have to by it.  Here’s what she has to say:

Black Beauties, you decide that you need to go from rocking the short and pizzazz to the long and flowly overnight. Or, you want to change from your hair from the usual to unusual.  If you are watching BET and you want a lace front wig like Beyoncé.  Here are the top do’s and don’ts of lace wigs:

DO spend the money for quality hair (meaning: Always by the top notch, or very close to it)
Don’t be cheap and get the hair from the wig barn (do they really exist?)

DO go to a licensed professional hairstylist
Don’t go to your cousin’s house and let her do it in the kitchen

DO get the hair to match the color of your hair
Don’t get multicolored hair, you’re not Nicki Minaj. Even she could barely pull that look off and she has a glam team following her.

DO get hair to match your texture.  If your hair is taco meat today, it can’t be silk tomorrow.
Don’t go overboard with curls.  Bigger is not always better. You don’t want to end up looking like the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz.

DO use the right amount glue to support the wig.
Don’t use too much that when your skin crinkles as you smile.

Do you guys have any do’s and don’ts? I’d love to hear them. You can follow Qiana on Twitter @ celebrityq.

I liked this piece very much. There are so many women who wear extensions, especially in Atlanta, that I feel like they need to know that it’s okay to wear extensions but it’s NOT okay to let the extensions to wear you!

Nice tips. I haven’t tried lacefronts yet but I do wear sew ins. The biggest tips I can give is to match the color and texture as close as possible, if you are wearing a partial make sure you cover the tracks completely and take care of your hair underneath.

DO REMEMBER THAT SOME LISENCED PROFESSIONALS CAN AND WILL HAVE YA WEAVE LOOKING LIKE A 1985 WIG SO PLEASE LADIES AND GENTS (I’M NOT JUDGING) ASK TO SEE PICS OF THIER RECENT WORK. ALSO DNT BE FOOLED BY THE PRICE. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR WEAVE PROFESSIONAL. MOST BEAUTICIANS WHO DO EXCELLENT WORK WITH WEAVES CHARGE ATLEAST $150 WITHOUT THE HAIR.
